Aquatics have a number of scientific management tools to
help in providing improved water quality. One of the most common
and beneficial tools is the use of mechanical aeration. Aeration
is the mixing process by which you help to add higher levels
dissolved oxygen to a given body of water. The two most common
methods of providing aeration to a pond or lake is either the
installation of floating type fountain or a diffused-air/sub
surface aeration system. Of these two mechanical types of
aeration, the diffused aeration system is the most effective,
flexible and economical process for providing superior water
mixing (de-stratification) and increasing dissolved oxygen
concentrations in your pond or lake.
Dissolved
oxygen concentration is a very important gauge for existing
water quality in any lake or pond. A multitude of oxygen
consumption is continuously occurring in the water column of any
given lake or pond. Fish, bacteria aquatic insects, snail’s,
crayfish and other organisms all utilize dissolved oxygen that
is present in water. Dissolved oxygen levels are required to be
at least 5 mg/L to support most warm water fish and even higher
(greater than 7 mg/L) to support a cold water fish populations.
Commonly sub-surface aeration equipment can be installed to
overcome most oxygen deficiency problems and maintain dissolved
oxygen levels to support fish, bacteria and other forms of
aquatic life. A properly sized diffused aeration system is most
practical in ponds and smaller lakes with water depths greater
than 5 feet.
Diffused-air/subsurface aeration can help to significantly
improve the water quality and the ecological balance of an
aquatic eco-system. There are several positive benefits of
proper aeration which include, increased dissolved oxygen
levels, prevention of both summer and winter fish kills,
reduction of certain nutrient problems, help to increase the
decomposition process of organic materials within the pond and
de-stratification and ensure mixing of the water column.
Generally the end results are a clearer and healthier lake or
pond, which can support a more balanced eco-system for aquatic
life and their aquatic environment.
